Day one.
I won't be able to do this everyday. But I thought I would share some of my thoughts and process during Inktober. I love sketching outside, but often have doubts or fears. I pushed myself to overcome these when I first began, but unfortunately the pandemic has caused some of them to return. I want to use this month to get back to more regular sketching outside, making it a daily habit again.
I have been drawn to the beautiful Ivy buds and flowers recently, and couldn't pass up a quick sketch of these on my run this morning. The colour stood out to me this morning, I noticed that there were no insects on them today. I stopped on a usually busy stretch, but because of the rain it was lovely and quiet. I did keep looking over my shoulder though.
Minimal Kit
Drawing in the rain.
I made a few notes along the route.
🍃 Aim - My aim today was to just get outside and get something on paper.
🍃Doubts/Fears - It was raining quite heavily. I procrastinated for 30 minutes! My fear of someone looking or talking to me began to surface.
🍃Kit - Kept it very simple. Waterproof fineliner, tiny sketchbook, running belt and hat.
🍃Mode and place - Running on my local trail, a well used public leisure route.
🍃Draw - I drew Ivy buds for around 30 seconds, and took some notes.
🍃After - Feel good for getting outside. I forgot how much I love running in the rain, when it rains it is nice and quiet. I noticed lots of changes in nature. I only drew for 30 seconds or so and did consider bringing a piece of Ivy home to draw, but decided this drawing was enough.
I don't usually write notes, but this is something you can do. I tend to have these in my head almost subconciously now.
What did you notice? Did you notice any signs of the changing of the seasons?
I noticed:
No insects on the Ivy due to the rain. I noticed that there aren't many Hawthorn berries or acorns this year. I noticed that the Oak leaves are still green, but the Sycamore has started to change colour and loose its leaves. A Jay flew passed me at the crossroads, what will they be eating this year with a lack of acorns.
I hope you manage to get outside and put your pen to paper.
You can share your sketches with me on Instagram, Substack, Facebook, or if you would prefer a more private place you can share on my chat forum which is free to access.
Happy sketching.
